What We're Up To...

Last weekend we had the opportunity to go to San Antonio on a "Baker Botts Retreat" with Lance's firm. We headed down to Austin on Thursday evening to stay at the Burton's house and to "drop off the girls" (thank you, thank you, thank you Melis :). Friday morning we drove to San Antonio, picked up a new pump at Walmart (of course this is the thing I forgot!...what's a nursing mom to do, ya know?), and got Lance all checked in and set for his day of classes. I visited with some other wives, shopped, and decided to treat my poor back to a massage at the spa (something I have never done...I would TOTALLY recommend it to anyone :)

After the firm dinner we just hung out with the other summer interns and associates. We played some fooze ball (which I beat my darling husband at...) and then just sat around visiting and drinking beer...I mean Sprite and Coke.

The next morning we had to get up at 8am if we wanted breakfast... which we did. I went back to bed after Lance took off for more classes. At 11:30am we packed up and headed to Six Flags. It was HOT!!! We had fun on the roller coasters... that's all there really is at those places, but realized we are NOT as young as we used to be and after about 4 hours we were ready to head home. After grabbing a quick dinner at Red Robin, which tasted fabulous after nothing since breakfast, we drove back to Austin and spent the night with the blessed Burton's once again.

Fathers Day we had a special treat of being able to attend our old ward, which we LOVE and MISS horribly. It was totally worth getting up at 7:30am for! I relished talking to my old friends and realized that when I move back to Austin I want to do more with them. We all enjoyed naps, thank heavens, and enjoyed a nice roast dinner. After cheesecake and putting off our departure as long as we could we pulled out for Dallas. We stopped at our storage unit in our old apartment complex and Beth wanted to stay at her "Austin home". For some reason whenever we pull into our "Dallas home" she yells..."NO Dallas home." I guess we know where she would rather be. At this point, so would we... We ended the night putting a screaming tired Beth in bed and Lance opening his body pillow, new shirt and tie, and card. It was a pretty low key Fathers Day. I was sad I wasn't able to do more for Lance. If I would have been home I would have done BBQ ribs, homemade ice cream, and actually wrapped his presents. Oh well... next year, right? He is a GREAT dad though and I hope he had a nice Fathers Day anyway...

(Story Time before bed)

It was a fun little trip and nice to get away. Thank you again a thousand times Melis and Leif for watching the girls so we could enjoy a night away. I enjoyed having some time to myself. I used to always want someone with me doing stuff but these days I am so grateful to get some time to myself. And time with Lance without the girls is "golden time".... all you parents know what I am talking about...

So now we are back into the old routine. Lance goes to work from 7am-6:30pm. Beth, Izzy, and I find ways to entertain ourselves without a car, and we enjoy the evenings together. It's too hot to spend much time outside. Today all of us girls got our swimming suits on and sat in the little inflatable pool on the porch. Needless to say we filled the whole things up. I think I need to get a bigger one :)
(Looks at those rolls... I know you are laughing Melis ;)

I spend my "free time" (when the girls are playing or sleeping) reading or on the computer. I am currently thinking of ways to make our flight to Utah easier. I am flying alone with the girls at 7:30am on the 13th of July. I thought about getting a sling in case I can't take Izzy's car seat on the the plane with me... I don't want to hold her 13 lbs. while she sleeps. Any suggestions on how to minimize the drama? I hope the plane isn't full so I can have the whole row, with BOTH car seats. I plan on having a DVD player for Beth, hopefully she'll fall back asleep. Luckily I get into Utah around 10 am so we will still have the day to catch up on sleep.

We are enjoying our time in Dallas for the most part. We take drives every Sunday around different area's to see where we would like to live. We get to go to nice places for dinner with associates trying to wine and dine Lance on the firms bill, which is lovely. I am getting used to leaving the girls with babysitters a little more.
Lance loves the firm he is working for and at this point if they make him an offer we will take it. The firm he is working for in Salt Lake is a much smaller firm that is on a totally different playing field. We figure if he works for Baker Botts in Dallas for a few years we will be able to go anywhere we want after that. It means no family close by for a while but I guess I'll just have to get used to flying with kids. I know a lot of you are in the same boat.
That makes it a little easier :)

P.S. Those of you who have a sling for your baby... is it worth it? Do they still like it when they are older... Izzy is almost 5 months and 13 lbs.

Hey, what a fun vacation! I am so glad that you and lance got to enjoy some time together! SO for flying I will give you some tips: I have only had the luxury of flying twice with brian, so if you have a double stroller it works great for loading beth and all of the stuff you have to take on the plane. I always check my stroller on the plane, not with the luggage that way I can have it in the airport with me. Next If beth sits well in her car seat bring it. Cami does so well in her car seat. With a regular seat she feels like she has lots of freedom so she doesn't sit, and it ends up in tantrums. The dvd player is one of the greatest inventions to man. If Izzy sleeps well with tylonal drug her. (If she can sleep most of the flight it is so much nicer) Also try feeding her when you take off and land. If you do not feel comfortable breastfeeding take a bottle (the airports usually let me take bottles with pumped milk through security) Also new treats, coloring books and books always work great with cami. For Izzy, I would take the car seat, if there is an extra seat by you then you can use it, if not you can always check it on the plane. (Make sure you get it tagged before just in case. Many times when I fly I put cami at the window and I sit with lyndsey on the isle seat. People don't usually want the middle seat, and babies usually scare people away. If the plane is really busy then you will have to move over, but usually there is always one extra seat, even if they say the plane is full. So enough advise, I guess if you have anymore questions you can email me or call me.

Oh and If you don't want to carry izzy around the airport, then I would put her on a sling, or I loved my Bjorn. Then you have both hands free.

Wow, sounds like a fun vacation, lucky duck! I think I'd be too nervous to leave my nursing baby though... That's great that she'll take a bottle so well from someone else.

About the sling- didn't like mine. Auston was uncomfortable, but then again he was only a few weeks old and was usually awake when I tried to have him in it.

I've never taken my infant seat on the plane... What do you do if there isn't room? I usually just hold my babies, but then again I don't have a bad back.

Yes, the DVD player is heaven sent. Hailey is old enough now that she's pretty content to watch shows most of the flight. If I throw in a new toy and some treats every now and then we're golden!

I think the hardest part of flying is going through security with two kids, all the crap that goes with it, and then taking everyone's shoes off!!! Oh, and then the clueless guy at the x-ray asks for the lovey blanket and the two-year-old has a meltdown...AH! If they'll let you, ask at the ticket counter if Lance can get a pass to come with you to the gate since you are travelling alone. They're usually pretty cool about it.

Oh yeah-- I agree with Steph-- try a Snugli or front carrier for Izzy instead of a sling. Then you at least have your hands free.
